This is why I hate home improvement: half the time it doesn’t go right, or they don’t finish some task, and you’ve got to follow up with whoever you hired and get them to fix it. No, I’m not referring to my current project. I’m talking about the new air conditioner I had installed at the same time I bought a new furnace last fall. I tried turning it on for the first time today, and it doesn’t work. Grrrrrr.
At first I thought maybe one of the circuit breakers was to blame. I checked both, though, and they’re on. I also tried turning the furnace switch off and back on. I also looked at the manual to see if I was missing anything. Other than a helpful diagram that showed a generic on/off switch having nothing to do with the actual equipment, and the advice that you should turn the power on, there was nothing to enlighten me as to the problem. So I’ll be calling the place that installed it tomorrow. Just what I need–more people running around here this week.
Thinking of home improvement reminds me that the chimney swift in New York has started laying her eggs. There were two in the nest as of last night. I looked tonight to see how many there were, and either there are three, or she rearranged them for the heck of it. Hard to tell. Anyway, here’s a picture from last night:

It’s fun to watch things progress with the swift nest. I’ve always been curious about what’s going on inside my chimney. Even if I weren’t afraid of disturbing the birds, though, I wouldn’t be able to see. It’s too dark in there, and all I’ve ever seen is the underside of a nest.
