I came home from work really crabby today. The construction on my house is wearing me out (okay, I think I’ve posted that about 100 times already), and my job was complicated and stressful today. I started wondering why I work such a complicated job to earn money to even own a house. What if I sold the house, got an easier job, and went back to apartment life? I logged onto my blog, though, and there was a comment from the owners of the Glenham chimney swift cam I’ve been watching. That put a smile on my face–it was really nice of them to drop by!
Chimney swifts are one good reason to own my home. They make me feel happy and good about my house, because they chose it as a nice place to live and raise a family. OK, maybe that’s kind of silly, but I do feel fortunate to share my home with them. When I see them flying around the neighborhood, it’s like I share a secret with them–I know where they call home, and some of the birds I see were born in my very own chimney.
That’s a nice segue to finally posting the screen caps I took of the Glenham chimney swifts in the past couple of days. I took this first screen cap on Sunday morning at 9:30 am their time. There were two eggs in the nest:

On Monday night at 6:41 pm, a bird was on the nest:

I thought maybe the bird was laying an egg, but the Glenham blog says the first egg was laid shortly after 4:00 am Friday. That makes me think this isn’t laying I’m seeing, but incubating. When I looked at the cam on Tuesday evening, there were three eggs in the nest:

Wednesday evening, I saw the swift on the nest again:

And now tonight, Thursday, there are four eggs in the nest:

Oooh, and while I was posting, the bird showed up on the nest for a little while, then left again. In any case, I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress. Until now, I’ve only been able to imagine what is going on in my chimney. So thanks to the folks in Glenham for putting a cam in their tower and letting me see for myself!
OH NO…. where’s the pictures ??? Are you ready for the upcoming Chimney Swifts nesting year? 2009 only a couple of months away…
Hey, good to see you! The links to the pictures broke a couple of months ago when I moved my blog from my website and onto wordpress.com. Thanks for the nudge–I just uploaded them so they can be seen here again.
I’m looking forward to the swifts’ return, but it sure feels like a long way off at the moment. It was -7 at the bus stop this morning!
So is your tower still up, or did you finish rebuilding and the birds will move back into your house this year?
Hi Amy,
Good to hear from you ! Sorry it took soooo long for me to get back here.. Well its not -7 anymore and the Swifts will be back in a couple of weeks.. YAY! I am sad to read all the things that have happened since my last visit. I believe fate happens and with the coming spring positive things will follow. Talk to you soon..
Good to hear from you too! Thanks for the good thoughts about the layoff. Yeah, it’s been rough, but I also think that as long as I find my way through and still keep my house, I’ll look back on this as a good thing. I’m most certainly thankful for spring to be on the way, and I can’t wait for my swifts to return as well!
If you think of it, stop by as soon as yours show up, and I’ll do a post and put a link to you. My readers might have wandered off a bit since I haven’t been keeping up with the blog recently, but hopefully you’ll get some traffic. I know there are folks here who love wildlife and would enjoy your cam too.
Hi Amy,
Hope all is well… Just to let you know… The Chimney Swifts have arrived in Glenham, NY this morning. All we have to do is wait until they enter the Tower. Not sure if these Swifts are ours.. Overhead Cam looking down into the Tower is up and running.. Refresh image for now.. http://glenhamny.com/?page_id=51
Woohooo! Good to know they’ve arrived…I hope they’re yours! I’ll do a blog post about you in the next couple of days so my readers can find you.
We’re having a drought here, so I’m not sure if this will be a good year for our swifts. We got good, soaking rains today, though, and if that trend continues, maybe all will be well.
Thanks for stopping in to tell me! Hope you are doing well.
