YES!

I loved waking up to good news this morning. I am so tired of the fear and darkness of the last eight years. I don’t know how much one man can fix things, and I’m sure Obama will make his own mistakes and do things I disagree with. But Bush is really and truly leaving office, and maybe we will become a nation that does not continue to torture people.

As for the economy, that’s a huge mess regardless of who won, and I still fear for my job. It’s not like the playing field changes on January 1st–just the players. But I’d rather have Obama at the helm than Palin. Our problems are not over. Far from it. But maybe now we have a shot at making things better.

Yay, Obama! You’re right, of course. Digging out of this mess is not going to be easy, but one of the things I like about Obama is that he is very clear that it’s not going to be easy and we all have to work together on it.

Yeah, I definitely like his candor. I also like knowing he’s pulled together many people with many different perspectives to brainstorm about what to do. It’s just so nice to have a president-elect who appreciates the value of thinking and surrounding yourself with intelligent people.

I do find myself holding my breath a bit. First, because the economic problems are so large and complex. Second, because I’ve become very cynical that politicians can do much of anything. I want to hope, but I’m a bit afraid to. But I’m glad Obama is in, because I really do think he’s the right person to try.

Bush was just such a disaster. He is not an intelligent person, and he surrounded himself with incompetent people. “You’re doing a heckuva job, Brownie!” will always resonate in my mind in connection to his presidency. I don’t remember ever being truly afraid before that the president was not in control and didn’t have a clue about how to deal with problems. It’s reassuring to have elected someone who demonstrates actual leadership skills.
