About

So do I write this in first person or third person? Third person would be a bit odd, don’t you think? After all, this is my blog, and if you’re here, I imagine you’ve already figured out I’m the one writing it. If I start this page out by saying: “Amy Hunter is an aspiring novelist,” I think it would sound like I take myself far too seriously. OK, I’m guilty of doing that at times, but perhaps it’s best not to encourage that, so first person it is.

I’m an aspiring novelist and I started blogging because the writing group I belong to does not allow political discussion. Back when I started my first novel, Falconsight, I wanted to discuss the ethics of espionage with people, because my fascination with that topic is part of what led me to begin the novel. Creating characters with conflicting points of view is far more interesting than if they all share the view of the writer, so I wanted to know what other people thought.

Unfortunately, the writing group’s desire not to discuss politics was stronger than my need to develop my characters, and I was told to go elsewhere if I wished to have such discussions. I never really found that elsewhere, and instead ended up reading a lot of articles and discussions in the Washington Post, which has good intelligence reporting. But of course, once you get a writer fired up and reading, they want to write, so the blog was a place to say what I wished, even though only three people, including my mom, ever stopped by.

Although I sporadically post here on politics, that’s not the main topic. There is no main topic here. I have an ambivalent muse, and I don’t feel I should have to limit myself. Posting on whatever I feel like is counter to the advice that you should specialize your blog to build traffic, but I’ve never been good at caring about conventional wisdom. So to heck with it.

My day job is in the tech industry, although I don’t talk a lot about that here. I get enough of work at work. In addition to writing, I also enjoy gardening and photography, and you’ll see those topics crop up here. Oooh, double pun. Score!

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, so you’ll sometimes find posts about this area. I also have a dairy allergy, and when I have a good recipe, I post it for others to enjoy. You can, of course, use these recipes even if you don’t have a dairy allergy, and it’s pretty easy to make substitutions for dairy products instead of soy products, if you prefer.

Anyway, welcome to my blog. I hope you find something you enjoy!
